TOPEKA, Kan. (KCTV) - Certain families in Kansas are scheduled to receive an additional $120 payment from the government this month.

The money comes from the Supplemental Pandemic Electronic Benefit, or P-EBT, program. Supplemental P-EBT is part of the American Rescue Plan Act passed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program is available to help families afford nutritious food to feed their children. The Kansas Department for Children and Families said the additional payment is to help reduce food insecurity for children across the state.

The state plans to send the extra payment to about 114,000 families who qualified for meals through the National School Lunch Program during last school year. The payment is for the summer months of June, July, and August. Kansas leaders said gathering the data was complex and took time, which is why the payments are now being made.

The payment will be issued through a direct process.

Parents and guardians who believe their children are eligible, but do not receive a benefit in January may request the Supplemental benefit using the DCF Self-Service Portal Feb. 1-29, 2024.

The P-EBT funds may be used to buy eligible foods from approved retailers that accept Food Assistance benefits like grocery stores, Amazon, or Walmart.
