LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) - A more than $7,000 infusion of cash is set to help those with disabilities get in and out of Lee’s Summit pools with ease this summer.

Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation announced on Wednesday, May 7, that Eitas has awarded it a $7,776 grant to increase accessibility and inclusion at area pools. The funds have been used to equip all three aquatic facilities with accessible wheelchairs, walkers and flotation devices.

Department leaders noted that the new features will ensure better access for those with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. Aquatic therapy offers various benefits, including:

  • Physical benefits - water’s buoyancy reduces the impact of poor balance and posture to allow for easier movement. Water therapy also supports skill development in head and neck stability, core strength and mobility.
  • Sensory stimulation - water provides visual, tactile and olfactory stimulation to create a calming and engaging environment.
  • Mental benefits - underwater surroundings can improve concentration, increase alertness and reduce anxiety to help individuals focus and engage more effectively.
  • Enjoyment and recreation - aquatic activities offer a fun, motivating and inclusive way for individuals to participate in exercise and leisure.

Parks officials indicated that they remain committed to inclusive environments and the removal of barriers to aquatic access. An investment in additional accessibility devices has expanded opportunities for everyone to enjoy facilities without concern for physical limitations.
