KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Mayor Quinton Lucas is not giving up on trying to unify the Kansas City Police and Fire Department’s call centers, despite it being a vexing task.

The issue isn’t just annoying to him though, many in Kansas City have found it frustrating when they are doing their best to manage an emergency, while also waiting through hold times that can last more than 4 minutes.

“I see this as another beginning in this long, tedious process for us to try to make sure these issues get addressed,” Lucas said.

Besides negotiating with the City Council, the Police Board of Commissioners, the Mid America Regional Council – KCFD has said in the past that they cannot unify with police without expanding their facility.

“I believe they estimated somewhere between $3 and $7 million as a cost for expanded dispatch,” Lucas said. “A whole new headquarters would cost a great deal more.”

The City Council held the ordinance that Lucas planned to introduce today for next Tuesday’s Finance, Governance and Public Safety Committee meeting.
