New nasal spray to treat migraines developed in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - This rainy weather plus the incoming holiday stress can trigger migraines. But there’s a brand new medicine available for that.
It’s called Timolol nasal spray and was developed in Kansas City. Doctors at North Kansas City Hospital found the same liquid in Timolol eye drops could be formed into a nasal spray.
This first-of-its-kind treatment can get into your blood stream more quickly to stop the migraine. Dr. John Hagan called it a major breakthrough in treating migraines.
“The nasal spray in 15 minutes has therapeutic levels,” Dr. Hagan explained. “So, if the patient gets the headache, they’ll use a spray in each nostril, if they don’t see an improvement in 10-15 minutes they’ll take a second spray in each nostril.”
A 15-mil Bottle costs $74 compared to the $600-$800 range Dr. Hagan said migraine pills cost.
It’s available now at O’Brien Pharmacy at 5453 W. 61st Pl Mission, KS 66205.
