KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Four local businesses were hit with burglaries in one night, among them a new vintage golf shop - in what is becoming a recurring theme in Kansas City.

This time, the crimes happened on the Kansas side of the state line, in the small community of Westwood. Sadly, this is becoming an all too familiar sight around the metro - broken windows and shattered glass on the ground.

But, this is the first time the crimes have happened in this Westwood business district.

“We kind of want to be a place where people can come and feel like they’re entering a different world,” said Max Ledom, owner of Mulligan’s Country Club, at 4759 Rainbow Blvd.

Ledom’s storefront is one of the newest in Westwood - and now he feels like his world has been rocked by crime overnight.

“My business had been broken into, burglarized,” Ledom lamented.

And he’s not the only one. The same scene was also found at Expert Alterations, the Westwood Animal Hospital, and down the street at the Hi Hat Coffee Shop.

“My whole staff is aware of what happened the other night,” noted Westwood Police Chief Curtis Mansell.

Chief Mansell said what happened that night was rare. In fact, in 2024, there were a total of 7 burglaries.

“This gives us four in one night,” Mansell continued.

“I felt very violated, I guess, just not anything we ever expected - especially being in this community,” said Brenna Speck, co-owner of Expert Alterations.

At the Alteration shop, it’s more than just a shattered sense of safety. The thieves also got away with a significant amount of cash.

“It’s a huge hit,” Speck noted. She added, “Any amount of loss right now is really hard, especially the amount we took and the timing.”

At Mulligan’s, a watch was taken, but no money.

“Most of the disturbance was behind the cash register where they would be looking for cash,” Ledom said.

Ledom said he knew that opening a store in Kansas City came with risks, but he never expected this.

“A little disheartened because I just opened on Saturday,” he continued. “I would’ve preferred it not happen within a week of opening; did not expect that to happen so fast.”

Westwood Police and businesses say they are now going to step up security, including the installation of more cameras.

But these business owners are also trying to keep things positive. On Saturday, March 8, they are asking everyone to show their support. Buy a coffee, shop at Mulligan’s, and get something altered. This way it can help them as they bounce back from this setback.
