KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Tis the season! It’s a Thanksgiving tradition many of us have been a part of in Kansas City for decades! It’s time to flip the giant switch and turn the Country Club Plaza into the ultimate holiday sparkle.

All around the Plaza, it’s about to become merry and bright.

It’s a tradition that dates back to 1930, when the very first Plaza Lighting Ceremony happened.

Putting up the lights every year is no small task, it starts every year after Labor Day. Crews begin hanging the strands of thousands of glimmering jewel-colored lights.

The Lighting Ceremony will be held between 5-8 p.m. on Nov. 28.

Live entertainment and festivities begin at 5 p.m.

At 7 p.m. is when the magic happens. That’s when Kansas City Chiefs owners Clark and Tavia Hunt will flip the switch (and yes the switch really does turn on the lights).

“Kansas City we’re a big city, but we also have that hometown feel, right? We like to be around our neighbors so something like this where a lot of community comes together, whether in person, on TV, or online, it’s just one of those things that makes Kansas City special,” said Michelle McConnell, Evergy Senior Manager of Community Relations.

Following the lighting ceremony, there will be a DJ from 7-8 p.m.

McConnell advises that if you plan on attending, you should go early.

There will be road closures to keep in mind. Check out a map of those closures here.
