(Gray News) - President Donald Trump said the first American pope is a “great honor for our country.”

Trump congratulated Pope Leo XIV, whose name is Robert Francis Prevost, on Truth Social.

“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!” Trump wrote.

The 69-year-old pope, who is from Chicago, is a Peruvian citizen and spent years in Peru as a missionary and archbishop before becoming a Cardinal.

He is the first American pope in the 2,000-year history of the Catholic Church.
