KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Chalk up another accomplishment achieved by Kansas City sports.

On Friday night, the Women’s Eagles, USA Rugby’s women’s team, squared off against Canada at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

While the United States fell 26-14 to their neighbors from the north, it was a win for Kansas City sports fans and rugby supporters across the country.

The announced attendance of 10,518 set a record for a standalone women’s rugby event in the United States. The previous record was just more than 2,000.

“This is incredible,” fan Victoria Morgan said. “We grew up as different forms of athletes, and we never got this sort of coverage for the sports we played. People like Ilona and Caitlin Clark, who are bringing attention to that, is just incredible for young girls.”

Capacity at CPKC Stadium is 11,500.

The match was part of the Pacific Four Series. The United States will take on Australia on May 17 and New Zealand May 23, both in their respective countries.
