KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City Public Schools prepare to break ground on what it’s calling a “transformative” project.

Crews plan to break ground on the King Empowerment Campus on April 23, 2025. The project will include the following three buildings:

  • Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School
  • Early Childhood Center
  • Family Empowerment Center

The Family Empowerment Center will work to inform and support parents and families about the educational opportunities available for students in the KCPS District.

JE Dunn Construction provided renderings of what the project may eventually look like.

A spokesperson for the district said the King Empowerment Campus is the first project from the collective bond. It is the $474 general obligation bond that voters just passed and the $100 certificate of participation (COP) financing agreement.

The empowerment campus will be paid for out of the COP agreement and would have been built even if the bond failed.
