JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. (KCTV) - A change to Missouri legislation has led Jackson County to announce updates to its Senior Property Tax Credit Program.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson signed Senate Bill 756 into law, changing two requirements initially established with the passage of Senate Bill 190.

As a result, there is now no social security retirement verification because the new legislation has an age requirement of 62 and older, Jackson County announced Monday. All that’s required to prove age is a government-issued document with a date of birth.

There is also now no market value limitations, with the new legislation prohibiting the county from requiring an eligible resident’s market value to be less than $550,000 in order to apply.

“This new legislation simplifies the application process for our senior residents, making it easier for them to access available property tax relief assistance,” said Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr.

Department of Collection Director Scott Lakin said residents who have already applied for the property tax credit do not need to re-apply despite the mandated changes to state law. The deadline to submit first-time applications is Dec. 31 of each year.
