Sporting KC to play Messi, Inter Miami in Concacaf Champions Cup

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Sporting KC’s 2025 season will kick off with a home-and-away series against MLS league MVP Lionel Messi and Inter Miami FC.

The series will be part of Round One of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.

Concacaf conducted its Official Draw for matchups on Tuesday night, setting the matchups and brackets for an international tournament featuring 27 clubs from across North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

Round One will be played in February. Sporting KC said in a release Tuesday night Concacaf is expected to announce the schedule soon but the dates could be either Feb. 4-6 + Feb. 11-13 or Feb. 18-20 + Feb. 25-27.

The winner of the two matchups based on aggregate scoring will advance to the Round of 16 to play Cavalier FC.

Sporting KC lost to Inter Miami FC, 3-2 in a matchup at Arrowhead Stadium in April 2024.

Tickets will go on sale next week, Sporting KC announced. Season ticket member seat locations are secured through the club’s right of first-refusal membership benefit and Sporting said season ticket members will have until Monday, Dec. 16 to opt out of receiving tickets at the season ticket member rate for the highly-anticipated matchup.

In its last appearance in the Concacaf Champions Cup, Sporting KC went to the semifinals in 2019. The club’s 2025 appearance in the tournament will be its seventh appearance in club history and was earned via being a finalist in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
