KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Sporting Kansas City introduced the man who will help take some work off Peter Vermes’ plate on Tuesday.

Sporting announced last week that former New England Revolution general manager Mike Burns would take the club’s sporting director position. Tuesday, he shared a bit about what that would entail.

“My direct report is Peter,” Burns told reporters. “And speaking frankly, that’s the way -- in my opinion -- it should be. I mean, Peter has been here forever. So this is not me coming in here telling Peter or anyone else what to do. Having said that, I’m going to be honest with them, I’m going to give my opinion. And I think more often than not, it’ll be a collaboration.”

A collaboration of some sort will be required to help Sporting Kansas City recover from a tumultuous season that has the club in second-to-last place in Major League Soccer’s Western Conference standings.

“It’s not as if somebody’s coming in and gonna tell me the ins and outs of this club,” Vermes said. “It’s impossible. I’ve been here for 18 years. But it’s not about that. It’s about us all collaborating and working together.”
