MVP forward Temwa Chawinga signs contract extension with KC Current
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - One of the biggest stars in soccer is staying in Kansas City for years to come.
The Kansas City Current and forward Temwa Chawinga have agreed to a three-year contract extension, the club announced Wednesday.
“This year, we hope to bring the trophy home for the fans, for KC,” Chawinga said in a statement. “My team has been good to me and they treated me well last season. My teammates are kind, my coach is amazing, and my KC community has been incredible. All the support, it feels like home here, that’s why I decided to extend my contract with the KC Current.”
The NWSL’s 2024 Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot winner will stay in KC through 2028.
“Securing Temwa’s long-term future in Kansas City was a significant priority this offseason,” Current general manager Caitlin Carducci said in a statement. “She had an amazing debut season, but both Temwa and our club feel that we are just getting started in reaching our potential together. We’re excited to see her wearing the Current crest for years to come.”
Chawinga scored a league-record 20 goals last season as the Current advanced to the NWSL semifinals.
She also became the first player in NWSL history to log a goal in eight straight regular season matches and score against all 13 NWSL teams.
