KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The former general manager of the Kansas City Current has found a new home in the NWSL.

Camille Ashton, who left the Current three weeks ago, is taking the role of sporting director and general manager of San Diego Wave FC, the club announced Wednesday.

“I’ve known Cami from back in her playing days and her impressive track record and deep understanding as both a general manager and former player, combined with her passion and energy make her an exceptional fit with this club,” said San Diego Wave FC President Jill Ellis.

Ashton previously held the Current’s GM role since January 2022. In her first season in Kansas City, the Current made the NWSL Championship.

This season the Current are unbeaten through 12 games and in first place in the league standings. Ashton’s additions of Debinha, Vanessa DiBernardo and others helped Kansas City become one of the premier teams in the NWSL.

But this offseason, Kansas City hired former United States women’s national team head coach Vlatko Andonovski as the club’s head coach and sporting director, a role that overlapped with Ashton’s.

In San Diego, Ashton will report directly to Ellis, another former USWNT head coach.
