KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The start of April means a new local charity for KCTV5′s Three Degree Guarantee initiative.

This month’s recipients will be KC Shepherd’s Center, a program dedicated to assisting families and older adults using Meals on Wheels. In fact, according to the KCSC website, KCSC brought the national Meals on Wheels program to Kansas City in 1972.

“We’ve always talked about this being a daily welfare check and a hot meal because oftentimes our volunteer is the only person our clients will see,” KCSC Executive Director Janet Baker said.

The Kansas City Shepherd’s Center’s ‘Meals on Wheels’ program provides meals five days a week to nearly 200 Kansas Citians. This provides the opportunity for people, especially older adults to receive a hot meal, stay comfortable and see a familiar face.

“There’s so much research now to see what we’ve always known and that is that people do better in their own environment than in long-term care or a nursing home,” Baker shared.

Bonds can sometimes be created amongst the volunteers and recipients. Greg and David use their visits to talk about the things they share in common, namely the Kansas City Chiefs.

In April, our First Warn 5 Weather team will raise $50 for this program every day, when they accurately forecast the temperature within three degrees.

Baker says that for $50 a day, the Three Degree Guarantee can feed at least one adult for a whole week.
