70-year-old metro area elementary school bids last farewell to students
NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A 70-year-old elementary school in North Kansas City has closed its doors for the last time as students prepare to transition over the summer.
After more than 70 years of service, the North Kansas City Public Schools says that as the school year drew to a close on Sunday, May 4, the doors to Winnwood Elementary School closed for the last time. Students will spend the summer in preparation for a move to Greenway Elementary.
To honor the school’s rich history, district leaders said Winnwood hosted a special open house on Sunday between 2 and 4 p.m. The last look event invited former and current students, families, staff and community members to gather, remember and celebrate the school’s legacy.
Guests were served refreshments as they perused photo galleries that showcased Winnwood’s history and took tours of the building for a final time. The event offered a chance for all to say farewell.
Meanwhile, district officials indicated that the move to Greenway Elementary marks an exciting new chapter for them as students are set to attend a new, modern school with an enhanced educational experience.
“We look forward to continuing the Winnwood legacy at Greenway, where we will carry forward the values of community, learning, and growth that have defined Winnwood for generations,” said Winwood Elementary Principal Aaron Barnett.
The school community encouraged those who were a part of the school’s history to attend the event and join the celebration.
“I always felt really loved and cared for here,” said Sandy Bailey, a former student. “It was just wonderful.”
