KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A significant piece of the Kansas City Chiefs defensive line will work in the NFC South next season.

On Monday, former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton signed a three-year deal worth up to $54 million with the Carolina Panthers, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Wharton’s deal includes $30 million in guarantees according to Garafolo.

The 26-year-old who played collegiately at Missouri S&T signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He lined up primarily at defensive end during his first two seasons in Kansas City before playing the majority of his snaps at defensive tackle over the last three years.

Wharton had 56 tackles and 13.5 sacks in 72 career games over his first five seasons in the NFL. He had 6.5 of those sacks in 2024 and forced a fumble in a Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals that was returned for a Chiefs touchdown.

He was a part of a Chiefs run that included back-to-back Super Bowl titles in 2022 and 2023 and a return trip to the Super Bowl again in 2024.

Wharton joins a Panthers organization that features Brandt Tillis, a former Chiefs front office member who is now Carolina’s vice president of football operations.
