Despite postponement, Sporting KC ready to take on Inter Miami on Wednesday
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) -Tuesday’s CONCACAF Champions Cup match between Sporting Kansas City and Inter Miami CF has been postponed 24 hours until Wednesday at 7 p.m.
In a statement, CONCACAF said the decision was made to prioritize fan and player safety. High temperatures in KCK on Tuesday are expected to be in the single digits, with windchills below zero, and snow on the way. Wednesday’s forecast is not much warmer, but no snow is expected.

On Monday morning, Sporting KC practiced outside at Children’s Mercy Park to get ready for the elements.
“I think once the game starts – as a player, because you are running around – you just get on with it,” said Sporting KC manager, Peter Vermes. “You play the game. Both teams have to do it. It’s part of the game.”
Postponing the game until Wednesday allows the snowstorm to pass, but temperatures will not rise significantly. However, if you talk to SKC, they’ll tell you they have a leg up on their South Florida counterparts.
“For Miami, it’s not easy for them to come play here in this type of conditions because Florida is obviously a little bit warmer and we can use it for our advantage for sure,” said SKC Midfielder, Erik Thommy.
Children’s Mercy Park has an electronically heated field that was installed in 2019. That technology means the players will not play on frozen turf on Wednesday.

“Our grounds crew has done a great job with the field here, with our heating system, all of that has been great,” Vermes said. “It’s given us a chance to play on grass. We wouldn’t have been able to do that at the training facility.”
To avoid injury, Sporting says it will be extra important to have a good warm-up before the game on Wednesday, as well as before the second half.
