KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - A year ago, soccer fans packed Arrowhead Stadium in shorts and t-shirts to watch Sporting KC take on Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF. Next week, they’ll need to swap those summer garb for coats and gloves. And a lot more.

Sporting’s CONCACAF Champions Cup match against Inter Miami is set for Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. The high that day is just 8°. The low: -3°.

The First Warn 5 Weather Team has upgraded Tuesday to a top alert First Warn Weather Day, as accumulating snow and some of the coldest air this season is expected to move in. The forecasted high temperature would make for the coldest day so far this winter, and the morning may bring wind chills as low as -15 to -20.

The frigid forecast is likely the reason dozens of tickets are still available. A Sporting KC official told KCTV5 that the club is still expecting a good crowd, and fans should not worry about potentially postponing the match due to the weather.

“Since this is a CONCACAF competition, they control if the match will go ahead, and they have stated that there is no temperature in which they will not play,” Sporting KC said.

Children’s Mercy Park will have additional heaters on the concourse along with complimentary hand warmers available at guest service locations. Fans can also bring in blankets and cardboard to stand on, but has a policy for nothing battery-powered.

The stadium’s canopy roof shields fans from some of the elements.

Sporting KC also relayed that there are still Shield Club tickets and passes available which allow fans access to an indoor club to warm up when they choose. The team’s retail stores will also be stocked extra with cold-weather gear.
