KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A soccer career that spanned 14 years in Kansas City and was highlighted by appearances in the Olympics and FIFA World Cup has come to a close.

Sporting Kansas City announced on Wednesday morning that longtime midfielder Roger Espinoza announced his retirement from professional soccer.

Espinoza, whose tenacity at the midfield position won the hearts of soccer fans across Kansas City, finished his Sporting Kansas City career among the best in franchise history in multiple categories:

  • second in club history with 399 appearances in all competitions
  • third in starts (330) and minutes (29,162)
  • fifth in assists (49)
  • 10th in total goal contributions (63)
  • first in U.S. Open Cup games played (21)
  • third in playoff appearances (21)

Espinoza played for Honduras at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups. He also played at the 2012 London Olympics, scoring against Brazil in the quarterfinals. He made 52 appearances with his national team through 2019.
