Blue Valley High product Dawson Merritt flips commitment from Alabama to Nebraska

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - Dawson Merritt, the son of Kansas City Chiefs defensive backs coach Dave Merritt, has made a significant flip in his college recruitment.
After being committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide since June, Merritt announced Thursday night he’s flipping to become a Nebraska commit.
Merritt is a four-star prospect as a linebacker out of Blue Valley High School. He’s the 116th rated recruit nationally according to 247 Sports’ Composite Rankings.
“Following my heart,” the Blue Valley senior said in a post on social media.
At Nebraska, he’ll play for Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule, who spent several years in the NFL as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
Merritt’s dad, Dave, has coached the defensive backs for the Chiefs for six seasons. He’s been in the NFL for 28 years, including a four-year career as a linebacker.
