LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - Bill Self landed another player out of the transfer portal Wednesday evening as KU Athletics announced the signing of St. Bonaventure guard Melvin Council Jr.

“We’re very excited to announce Melvin Council Jr. has signed,” Self said in a release from KU. “He’s a 6-4, long, rangy guard that can play with the ball and without the ball. Melvin will remind our fans physically and athletically of Tyshawn Taylor.”

Council Jr. chose KU after visiting Lawrence and Mississippi State.

He averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game during his season at St. Bonaventure. Those averages helped him become an All-Atlantic 10 Third Team selection.

“He’s a superior athlete who can score the ball and has the potential to be one of the more elite defenders that we’ve had in recent memory,” Self said.

Prior to playing at St. Bonaventure, Council Jr. was a All-Northeast Conference First Team selection at Wagner College. Before playing at Wagner, he was a two-time NJCAA Division I All-American at Monroe College.

He’ll have one season of eligibility at Kansas and becomes the Jayhawks’ third signee out of the transfer portal, joining Loyola Chicago’s Jayden Dawson and Illinois’ Tre White.
