LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - It’s officially the postseason for Kansas men’s basketball.

On Wednesday, KU will play its opening round game of the Big 12 Tournament against the winner of UCF vs. Utah. Kansas head coach Bill Self met with the media Monday afternoon to talk about his team’s preparation for March Madness.

“I think we still have enough gas in the tank to play our best moving forward,” Self told reporters. “If we do that, it could make for a very exciting time for us.”

The Jayhawks beat No. 24 Arizona 83-76 last Saturday to pick up their 20th win of the season. KU has now won 20 games in 36 straight seasons, extending the program’s Division I record. The Jayhawks are the 6-seed at the Big 12 Tournament.

“I always say when you’re the 1 seed going into the tournament, it’s a chance to validate what you have accomplished over the last two and a half months,” said Self. “This would probably be a chance to do the opposite.”

KU is anxious to wash the taste of a rough season out of their mouths and prove they are among the nation’s best. Self called his team the sleeper team of the tournament and said his team could turn a corner and prove a lot of doubters wrong.

“We have been average in conference play. Now it’s time to give us an opportunity to actually perform at a level this year that nobody has seen us play at, at least within our league,” said Self.

KU is scheduled to tip off against either UCF or Utah on Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m. at T-Mobile Center. With a win, the Jayhawks would get a rematch Thursday night with Arizona.
