Father killed, his fiancée seriously injured after being hit by car while changing flat tire

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WXII) – A man was killed and his fiancée was seriously injured when they were hit by a vehicle while changing a tire on the side of a highway in North Carolina.

Christopher Hammonds and his fiancée Lisa, whose last name wasn’t given, were changing a flat tire on U.S. 29 in Greensboro on May 2.

Police said they were pulled over on the shoulder and had their hazard lights on.

Police said another vehicle ran off the roadway and struck the couple and their vehicle.

Hammonds died, and Lisa was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Family members said Lisa just recently beat stage 3 breast cancer, and Hammonds was with her every step of the way. Now, she’s recovering from numerous injuries.

“She’s got many broken bones, collapsed lungs, lacerations to body parts, internally – it’s just a really sad situation,” said Connie Anderson, Hammond’s sister.

Hammonds leaves behind children, nieces and sisters who will miss him dearly.

“I’m not going to … hear his voice, because ain’t nobody have his voice. He’s so funny,” his daughter Tiffany Hammonds said.

The family said Christopher Hammonds will miss milestone moments with his kids.

“He’s not going to be here to be able to see his daughter who is fixing to walk across the stage [at graduation],” Anderson said. “He’s got another one that’s going to be walking across the stage next year, or to even know what it feels like to be a grandfather.”

Two GoFundMe pages have been set up to help the family – one to help support Christopher Hammonds’ children and another to help his fiancée in her recovery.

The driver who struck the couple was identified as 25-year-old Robert Lynn Faison Jr., a science teacher at Dudley High School in Greensboro. Police said he was driving while under the influence.

He is facing several charges and has been suspended from his job.

Faison is charged with DWI, failing to maintain lane control, failing to reduce speed to avoid a collision, felony serious injury by vehicle, and felony death by vehicle.
