Royals call up veteran catcher, move Marsh to 60-day IL in slew of moves

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Royals made a slew of roster moves Friday ahead of a weekend series in Baltimore against the Orioles.
The Royals called up catcher Luke Maile from Triple-A Omaha and optioned utility man Tyler Tolbert back to the Storm Chasers in a corresponding move.
Tolbert made his MLB debut in March against the Milwaukee Brewers and has appeared in 13 games for the Royals this season.
Maile was called up a day after the Royals said catcher Salvador Perez exited a game against the Tampa Bay Rays due to left hip soreness. Perez was not in the Royals starting lineup on Friday against the Orioles.
The 34-year-old reserve catcher played in 53 MLB games with the Cincinnati Reds last season. He had a .178 batting average in those games.
Right-handed pitcher Alec Marsh, who was placed on the injured list ahead of Opening Day in March, was transferred to the 60-day injured list on Friday, the club also announced.
Marsh, a 25-year-old with two years of big-league experience, pitched 129 innings for the Royals last season with a 4.53 ERA and a 9-9 record. He was drafted by the Royals in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of Arizona State and spent a portion of 2024 as Kansas City’s fifth starter in the rotation.
The Royals and Orioles open their 3-game series Friday night in Baltimore with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CT.
