JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. (KCTV) - Voters this fall in Johnson County will consider a renewal of the public safety sales tax.

The Johnson County Board of County Commissioners voted Thursday to add a question to the November ballot regarding it. If approved by voters, revenue would be shared between Johnson County and all the cities in the county.

That funding would help provide money for a wide variety of public safety programs. Some of those programs include:

  • Emergency Medical/Ambulance Services (MED-ACT)
  • Johnson County Sheriff’s Office
  • Mental Health Crisis Intervention
  • Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Response
  • Department of Corrections
  • District Courts
  • District Attorney’s Office

The ballot language coming in November will read as follows:

The county said renewing the sales tax would generate approximately $54 million annually based on current collections. Of that $54 million, $35 million -- or 64% -- would go to the county and $19.7 million would go to the cities.
