Fans and businesses share excitement for 2024 NWSL Championship coming to CPKC Stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - On Wednesday, the National Women’s Soccer League announced its 2024 championship game will be held in Kansas City. It’s another big moment for CPKC Stadium.

On March 16, the KC Current kicked off its season inside the first stadium dedicated to a women’s sports team: CPKC Stadium.

Nearby businesses have seen a big boost from the many games already this year.

“We see quite a few people obviously the parking is right out here and a lot of people will walk down but they will get dinner before they go,” said Pigwich and Local Pig General Manager, Shane Taylor.

Pigwich and The Farmhouse enjoy the extra visitors whenever the KC Current is playing at home.

In a few months, fans are excited to see the big NWSL Championship game come to the heartland.

“I think there has been a shift since I was young for women’s sports in general and for soccer in Kansas City and all these things working together to make this a really exciting time,” said KC Current fan, Amber Kovac.

“For people to be exposed to like what is here that they may not know in Downtown Kansas City,” said KC resident, Levi Gniotczynski.

While the stadium’s capacity is lower than previous championships games, the announcement is putting another big spotlight on the stadium.

“It is just so awesome for women to get their due, get their recognition,” said KC Current fan James Roswold.

Parking has been a hot topic for the stadium, but fans believe it will be figured out by November. Business hope the same.

“It will be an adjustment I hope the city is planning ahead,” said The Farmhouse General Manager Sidney Fish.

“I love it for the city being on a national stage getting people from all over the country to come here it is going to be amazing,” said Taylor.

With thousands expected to catch the game on the pitch or from a watch party, The Farmhouse is looking into possibly adding nighttime events.

Businesses are hoping to score big in November as this game may give a smaller-scale look into what the World Cup might bring in 2026.

The NWSL Championship Game is on November 23 on CBS.
