BROOKLYN (KCTV) - Kansas basketball fans greatest reason for optimism heading into next season got bigger Tuesday night as Jayhawk signee Darryn Peterson took part in the 2025 Boys McDonald’s All-American Game.

Peterson was named co-MVP of the game along with Duke commit Cameron Boozer after scoring 18 points and leading the West team to a 105-92 win over the East.

The 6-foot-5 guard from Napa, California, showcased his jump-shooting ability along with his explosiveness at the rim, converting on five dunks -- including a putback slam early in the game and another one late to help seal the victory.

Peterson’s McDonald’s All-American Game honor is the latest for him in a standout senior season of prep basketball. In March, he was named the 2025 Naismith Boys High School Player of the Year, joining Andrew Wiggins and Cliff Alexander as the third Jayhawk to be named the winner of the award prior to their arrival in Lawrence.

He has averaged 30.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game for Prolific Prep in Napa, California, during his senior season of high school basketball.

“This is one of the best recruiting moments that Kansas basketball has had in decades,” KU head coach Bill Self said in November when Peterson signed with the Jayhawks. “Darryn is an all-around guard that scores at all levels and is also a terrific facilitator and defender.

“Darryn was as important as any recruit we have recruited in recent memory. Darryn can be a catalyst to also draw other players to our program.”

It’s unclear who Peterson’s teammates will be next year as Kansas is in the midst of a roster turnover that has already seen several players enter the transfer portal following a disappointing 21-13 season in 2024-25.
