Teen shot, killed on 71 Highway hours before ProspectUS revitalization rollout
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Monday, May 5, just after 10:30 p.m., patrol officers were called to 75th Street and Bruce R Watkins, or 71 Highway, on a medical emergency.
Passing motorists had called 911 after seeing a man lying lifeless on Bruce R Watkins.
Police identified the victim as 18-year-old Deon Porter.
When officers arrived, they found Porter suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Officers began CPR while fire and ambulance arrived on scene. Medics transported the teen to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Investigators are working to determine what led up to the man’s death.
Detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses, and crime scene personnel are processing physical evidence.

This homicide comes just hours before the rollout of ProspectUS - a new plan to revitalize the area.
