Paid sick leave mandatory this week in Missouri
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Missouri Supreme Court ruled that the results in last November’s election were valid.
In a court filing released on Tuesday afternoon, the court ruled challenges to Proposition A were invalid.
Shortly after the election, three registered voters and six other entities filed a lawsuit alleging the results violated the state constitution. Attorneys argued the ballot measure should not have included both topics of minimum wage and paid sick leave. They argued that the issues should have been separate propositions after citing a single-subject requirement of the Missouri Constitution.
The state’s high court disagreed. The decision, written by Chief Justice Mary R. Russell and five other judges, cited that Proposition A’s summary was “not misleading or inaccurate so as to constitute an irregularity casting doubt on the election.” The decision added that the Supreme Court lacks jurisdiction over whether the proposition violated the constitution, does it have jurisdiction over challenges after the election was already held.
The ruling means paid sick leave will be mandatory in the state of Missouri, starting Thursday.
