As officials work to keep teams in Missouri, voters say get it done on your own dime
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - This week, Jackson County leaders traveled to Jefferson City to meet with lawmakers and the governor about keeping Kansas City sports teams in Missouri.
On Thursday, Kansas City-area lawmakers filed legislation that allows the state to create incentives to help keep professional teams in the state. The Missouri Senate bill got support from Mayor Quinton Lucas.
It comes as both the Chiefs and Royals continue to explore options for new stadiums following a majority no vote in Jackson County on renewing the stadium sales tax.
As discussions were being help in Jeff City, KCTV5 wanted to know if Jackson County voters would support a Chiefs-only stadium sales tax. It was a proposal brought by county legislators to put on last year’s November ballot, but it ended up never going before voters.
“They are the heart of the city,” said Alan Locks, regarding the Chiefs. “They’re better than the Royals, I’ll tell you that.”

Locks was born and raised in Kansas City. Despite being a lifelong Chiefs fan, he is against a Chiefs-only stadium sales tax.
“No,” said Locks. “I don’t think we should have to pay the sales tax out of our pocket. Make everybody that comes here to our stadium make them pay for it.”
He’s not alone; In fact, the general consensus amongst those who answered the questions was no.
“I am not in favor of any sales tax increase ever,” said Mike Strano.
“No,” said Jania Lee. “I am tired of supporting stuff that has nothing to do with me. I’m not getting anything from it, I don’t go to the stadium. Like, if it’s not doing anything for our city, while millionaires and billionaires make more money off of us, I would say no to that.”
As city, county, and state leaders work to keep both the Chiefs and Royals in KCMO, some voters hope that’s achieved without their tax dollars.
