Blue Valley institutes new policy banning sex offenders from school property, events
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - The Blue Valley School District is banning registered sex offenders from all school property and events.
Monday night, the district’s school board approved the new policy.
The new policy comes after a sex offender was allowed to attend a school dance with the daughter of his girlfriend. They did have permission from the school’s principal.
Sex offender’s attendance at school dance sparks Kansas bill to outlaw possible recurrences
Some parents took to social media, sharing their disdain for what they feel is a lack of proper policy in place at the district level.
Senator Kellie Warren, who chairs the Kansas Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced a bill in the Kansas State Capitol that would prohibit some registered sex offenders from being at a school or school activity. She introduced the bill after hearing about the incident at a Blue Valley elementary school dance.
That bill never got a final vote.
Although Kansas does not have a law that mandates where sex offenders can or cannot live, work, or go to school, courts can restrict registered sex offenders from living near parks or schools if they are deemed higher risk.
The Blue Valley School Board meets in May to discuss how administrators will enforce the new policy.
