Lee’s Summit School District asks voters to address future needs with bond issue

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) - The Lee’s Summit School District is asking voters to invest in the future when they head to polls April 8.

The district is asking voters to approve a $225 million no tax rate increase bond issue.

If passed, the bond would be used the following ways, according to the school district.

  • Update schools for accessibility, safety and future learning
  • Allow district to plan for future growth and accommodations
  • Prioritize upgrades and deferred maintenance districtwide

The district also provided a list of schools and projects it would like to complete. The wish list includes the following:

  • Build a new Greenwood Elementary
  • Build a new Hazel Grove Elementary
  • Renovate Pleasant Lea Middle School and add a sixth grade addition
  • Renovate Miller Park
  • Aerospace Classroom at Lee’s Summit Airport
  • Upgrade Baseball and Softball Fields at Lee’s Summit North and Lee’s Summit West High Schools
  • Soccer and Band Field Upgrades at all Three High Schools
  • Safety and Security Improvements
  • New Classroom Furniture
  • General Capital Improvements

If approved, money would also be used to buy land for future schools, including future elementary schools, as needed.

If the issue is not passed, the district would need to come up with a different plan to address future needs.

Voters are being asked to maintain the debt service tax rate at $0.87 per $100 of assessed valuation on real and personal property to fund the projects. The bond issue will not increase the the tax rate.
