Soccer fans bundle up, brave cold for bone-chilling Sporting KC home opener
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Dangerously low temperatures didn’t stop soccer fans from heading to the pitch Wednesday night.
On Wednesday night, Sporting KC hosts Inter Miami at 7 p.m. By the time the match kicks off, the temperature will be around five degrees. Once it’s over, it’ll be zero. If those temperatures hold, this will be the coldest professional soccer game between MLS teams ever.
Hunter Wallace went into his closet and brought out all his ski gear to wear to the game.
“Obviously, we are going to wear coats, wool socks, pretty much we are going to dress like we’re going skiing,” Wallace said. “We’ve even got ski goggles that we are going to put over our face and hopefully keep us a little warmer.”
Wallace said he wasn’t too concerned about the possibility of frostbite. His wife, on the other hand, was.
“She’s pretty nervous about it,” Wallace said. “She’s like, ‘Are you sure you want to go? Is it safe for you to go?’”
Wallace said the thought process behind attending the game stems back to when he was younger, even though he won’t necessarily be cheering for the home team.
“I’m a really big soccer fan, a really big Barcelona fan,” Wallace said. “They’ve got several players that played for Barcelona that I watched growing up. They are all kind of older now, so it’s probably one of the last chances I’ll get to watch them play in person.”
The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department warns fans that if you start to feel numb or tingles, get somewhere warm. Dress in layers, wear a hat, pick mittens over gloves, and constantly check on younger or older fans.
According to a Sporting KC spokesperson, they made several adjustments inside and outside of the stadium. That included free shuttles, heaters, hand warmers, and hot chocolate.
