Significant detour coming to motorists using I-435 this weekend

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (KCTV) - A significant detour is coming for motorists planning to use I-435 in Johnson County this weekend.

Eastbound and westbound I-435 will be fully closed to traffic beginning at 7 p.m. Friday as crews work on demolishing the northbound U.S. 69 over the I-435 bridge. The bridge demolition is part of the 69 Express project.

The Kansas Department of Transportation said I-435 will close from Quivira Road to Antioch Road. They’ll also close the westbound I-435 to southbound U.S. 69 ramp.

The ramp and all lanes of I-435 will reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, May 12.

A long-term full closure of the eastbound I-435 to northbound U.S. 69 ramp and northbound U.S. 69 to westbound I-435 ramp -- which are scheduled to close Thursday night at 7 p.m. -- will remain in place through October, KDOT officials said.

Here’s what KDOT outlined for detours this weekend:

• Eastbound I-435 traffic: Travel east on I-435 to the use southbound U.S. 69 ramp. Continue south to use the College Boulevard exit ramp. Turn left on College Boulevard and travel east, then turn right to use the northbound U.S. 69 entrance ramp. Travel north on U.S. 69 to use the eastbound I-435 ramp and continue east on I-435.
• Eastbound I-435 to northbound U.S. 69 traffic: Travel east on I-435 and use the southbound U.S. 69 ramp, then continue south on U.S. 69 to exit at 119th Street. Turn left to travel east on 119th Street, then turn left to use the northbound U.S. 69 entrance ramp.
• Westbound I-435 traffic: Travel west on I-435 to use the northbound U.S. 69 ramp. Continue north on U.S. 69, then exit at 103rd Street. Turn right on 103rd Street and travel west, then turn right and travel south on U.S. 69 to use the westbound I-435 entrance ramp and continue west on I-435.
• Westbound I-435 to southbound U.S. 69 traffic: Travel west on I-435 to use the northbound U.S. 69 ramp and continue north on U.S. 69, then exit at 103rd Street. Turn right and travel west on 103rd Street to use the southbound U.S. 69 entrance ramp.
