Judge grants internet access to Johnson County man charged with child sex crimes
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A former Johnson County employee will be allowed to use the internet leading up to his trial even though he is accused of preying on children while online.
A Johnson County judge granted Christopher Wehunt’s request during a court hearing May 6. Wehunt is required to have software to monitor his online access according to online court records.
Wehunt is charged with three counts of sexually exploiting a child.
According to the complaint filed in Johnson County Court, Wehunt enticed someone he believed was under the age of 18 to engage in sexually explicit conduct. He is also accused of having a video of someone under the age of 18 engaging in a sexually explicit act.
The complaint alleges the crimes happened between Aug. 1, 2024 and Oct. 11, 2024.
Another court document shows Wehunt acknowledged being in contact with at least 10 children to try to get nude images of them.
He was also found in possession of images that prosecutors believe show child sexual abuse.
Wehunt worked for Johnson County Government in the county’s emergency communications center from Jan. 1, 2015 until Oct. 21, 2024.
Wehunt will be back in court in June for a preliminary hearing.
