‘Anguish and anxiety’: KC nonprofits fear future amid federal cuts
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Dozens of local nonprofits or non-government agencies (NGOs) met Tuesday to talk about how to discuss their future in uncertain time.
This was a meeting the United Way of Kansas City urgently called to help agencies navigate potential loss of funding as executive orders continue to fly out of Washington D.C.
This meeting idea was started just weeks ago after the United Way noticed discussions happening between area nonprofits about how they would handle a loss in funding.
Over 200 people from dozens of nonprofits showed up to the Convention Center Tuesday to share ideas. The group heard from United Way of Kansas City’s President, the Executive Director of ACLU Kansas, leaders from the Missouri Budget Project. Leaders from the various non-government organizations collaborated at round tables set throughout the room.

Nicole Jacobs-Silvey from Connection Coach KC moderated the event. She says there isn’t one answer they’re looking for, but hope agencies can walk away with some new tools in their toolbelt to tackle any potential impacts to funding.
“We’ve never seen such a broad reach of risks and threats to our sector and the services that we provide,” she said. “This first quarter of 2025 has been a time filled with anguish and anxiety and fear for lots of nonprofits, not only for the services that we provide to some of the most vulnerable in our community, but if we’re gonna be able to do the work that we do and keep our doors open.”
As they work to navigate the uncertainty of their futures, residents are encouraged to also reach out. If you’re in need of help, call 211 to get connected to a variety of area nonprofits.
