Lee’s Summit voters pass bond issue, approve $225 million for school improvements

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) - The Lee’s Summit School District will use millions of dollars to update safety, improve facilities, and plan for the future.
Lee’s Summit voters passed a $225 million bond issue on April 8.
Prior to the vote, the school district said if the bond issue passed it would use the money in the following ways:
- Update schools for accessibility, safety and future learning
- Allow district to plan for future growth and accommodations
- Prioritize upgrades and deferred maintenance districtwide
The district also provided a detailed list of schools and projects it plans to complete. including the following:
- Build a new Greenwood Elementary
- Build a new Hazel Grove Elementary
- Renovate Pleasant Lea Middle School and add a sixth grade addition
- Renovate Miller Park
- Aerospace Classroom at Lee’s Summit Airport
- Upgrade Baseball and Softball Fields at Lee’s Summit North and Lee’s Summit West High Schools
- Soccer and Band Field Upgrades at all Three High Schools
- Safety and Security Improvements
- New Classroom Furniture
- General Capital Improvements
The bond issue will not increase the tax levy, but will allow it to borrow money to fund the capital projects.
Lee’s Summit R-7 School District voters also elected two new members to the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District Board of Education. Here’s a look at those races:
- Michelle Dawson received 32.56% of the vote.
- Nicky Nickens received 30.85% of the vote.
- Jennifer Foley received 19.81% of the vote.
- Leon Weatherby received 16.48% of the vote.
