CPKC stadium, River Market businesses ready to repeat KC Current success in year 2
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The countdown is on as the KC Current gears up for its second season at CPKC Stadium.
The kickoff is at home on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. against the Portland Thorns.
The Current said the team has a lot to offer fans -- both on and off the field.
For the 2025 season, Executive Chef, John Woychick said last year was groundbreaking, this year their focus is sustainability and reducing their carbon footprint.
A few ways they plan to do that are through more vegan and gluten free options like brussel sprouts nachos, vegan pudding and gluten free chicken tenders and fries.
Fans will also notice sustainable forks and spoons inside the stadium and plastic bottles or cups missing from menus.
While the team has plenty of plans to build from a groundbreaking season, River Market businesses are also preparing for a major boost.
River Bluff brewing threw watch parties last season and is ready for round two.
“We’re super excited to have the team back and going,” Hootie Wales, General Manager, said. “Normally when we have a current match going on we’ll have a line out the door, shoulder to shoulder people in here, but it ends up being a fun party.”
The debut season brought thousands of fans to the area, Wales said they’re anticipating even larger crowds and they’re ready for it.
“Especially, when their whole season runs from March to November it helps out quite a bit.”
Wales said having the stadium nearby, has changed the atmosphere of the River Market.
“Those game days you really see that boost, where the whole neighborhood is teal, everybody’s out walking around, visiting all the businesses makes for a very fun weekend and time when the games are going on,” he said.
Wales said not only will they be bringing back their KC Currant sour beer for the new season, but they will also be open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, if you want an early morning print.
Over at CPKC Stadium, preps were underway on Tuesday. The team said 2024 was historic for women’s sports, this year they say it will be bigger, bolder and better.
“I’m really looking forward to the new food and beverage options, surprising fans game in and game out with not only the amazing experience for the fans but also the incredible, incredible product that is going to be on the pitch,” Dani Welniak, VP of Communications for KC Current, said.
The team said they are excited to see how the stadium and fan base continues to evolve, with a year under their belt, they’re even more prepared for year two.
“Let’s just say it’s going to be a very, very special and fun year,” Welniak said.
