KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An arrest warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Kansas City man accused of stealing more than $9,000 in sunglasses from an area sporting goods store.

Platte County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Monday, April 28, indicate that Luis A. Perez-Becerra, 23, of Kansas City, has been accused of the theft of more than $9,000 in sunglasses from a metro area Dick’s Sporting Goods.

A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department revealed that just before 1:45 a.m. on June 9, 2024, law enforcement officials were called to the Dick’s at 8665 NW Prairie View Rd. with reports of a break-in.

When first responders arrived, they said they found a window had been shattered by the suspect, later identified as Perez-Becerra. Inside, two large trash bags with merchandise and a backpack were found. Multiple glass display cabinets had also been broken into.

The manager later reported that 53 pairs of sunglasses worth more than $9,200 had been taken. Security footage, which caught the incident on camera, was also provided.

In July, investigators said they were contacted by the Merriam, Kansas, Police Department, which reported they interrupted a burglary at the Dick’s at 5600 Antioch Rd. The suspect left a pair of pants that matched the pair worn in the footage of the earlier break-in.

The Merriam Police Department indicated that traffic camera footage showed the suspect leave the scene of the break-in and get into a blue Mazda with New Mexico license plates. A traffic stop of the same car that happened months earlier in Westwood revealed the driver to be Perez-Becerra.

Later in July, law enforcement officials said Perez-Becerra was stopped by the Overland Park Police Department and he was arrested. A search of his car revealed the same backpack that was seen stolen during the Kansas City break-in. Two pairs of stolen sunglasses were also found.

Court records indicated that Perez-Becerra was not charged for the crime, however, until Monday, when he was accused of burglary and theft. A warrant for his arrest was also issued with the condition of a $15,000 bond attached.

Perez-Becerra had previously been held behind bars in Johnson County, Kansas, for his crimes there; however, he posted bond and was released before the Missouri charges were filed.

As of Sunday, May 4, Perez-Becerra does not appear to have been taken into custody for his Missouri charges. A hearing has not yet been scheduled in the case. No further information has been released.
